Following the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza—which continues despite the supposed “ceasefire”—we are witnessing yet another war in our neighborhood.

The U.S. and Israel are bombing Iran and Lebanon and launching attacks on Syria, turning the entire Eastern Mediterranean region into a theater of war, horror, and death.

As workers and as a union, we condemn this attack, which has nothing to do with the interests of the peoples of the region. No matter what the world’s powerful say on their channels and in their statements, we are absolutely certain that they did not care about “human rights” and “democracy,” Israel, which is committing genocide against the Palestinians, and the U.S., which is unleashing ICE task forces in its own country to murder civilians… No matter how often they have trotted out the same arguments to justify imperialist interventions and “regime changes” for decades, the real causes of this new bloodshed are their own interests and their own agendas.

Control over oil and other wealth-producing resources, trade routes, and power in these countries—that is the goal of the U.S., Israel, and their allies. The vultures of the war industry and international capital are ready to treat yet another war zone as an opportunity for profitable business.

On the other hand, as workers, we are already paying for the daily increases in fuel and energy costs, in supermarket prices, and there’s more to come… While the modern-day “black marketeers”—multinationals companies and employers—are throwing a new party of profiteering… The dilemma has already been posed by government officials: “Do you want pay raises and pensions, or ‘security’ and frigates in Cyprus?” Thus announcing that even the meager minimum wage increases to be decided in the coming days will be smaller than the few euros they had previously announced.

Greece is also participating in this unjust war against the Iranian people and other nations, no matter what ministers and government officials may say! The deployment of the frigate Kimon and Greek F-16s to Cyprus has nothing to do with protecting the Cypriot or Greek people. The British bases that aid Israel and the Americans pose a danger to Cypriots, and for this reason they are targets for retaliation. The NATO and U.S. bases in Souda, Larissa, and Alexandroupoli, which are participating in the military operation, pose a danger. The Greek Patriot missiles in Saudi Arabia, the announcements regarding assistance to Bulgaria’s air defense, and the deployment of Greek forces to Gaza constitute dangerous aggressive actions, not some form of “deterrence” or an activity for our “security.”

The labor movement and working people have only one interest: to say no to war and interventions in other countries. Mass struggles against the war machine, to decisively say no to the country’s involvement in war.

We must demand that the military bases be closed and removed from Greece, and that no soldier be sent beyond our borders.

We must demand that our own needs be met—wage increases, collective bargaining agreements, and jobs with rights—and oppose the multi-billion-dollar arms programs, war spending, racism, nationalism, and militarism.

Let us declare loudly that the people do not need “protectors”, that only the joint struggle and solidarity of the peoples of the region can bring peace, against death brought by war.
